Our History

The Waverly story begins in 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland. A young couple, Charles Edward Haines Sr. and Alice Yeagle Haines, borrowed $1,500 to start a small textile converter business they named Waverly Prints. Charles had experience printing a variety of fabrics, while Alice lent her keen eye for color and design.
Working initially out of their home, they printed tablecloths, curtains, upholstery and other textiles using beautiful imported European fabrics. Their samples were carried in a suitcase up and down the Atlantic coast, proudly displaying the quality and craftsmanship of Waverly Prints.
The timing was serendipitous – Waverly Prints emerged just as home decor was blossoming into a fashion industry. Their choice of unique, high-end fabrics filled a need as homes became more stylized and decorative in the early 20th century.
Even through the Great Depression, Waverly Prints survived and grew. By 1936, they had moved to a storefront in downtown Baltimore. Charles and Alice weathered challenges by sticking to their principles of quality, style and service.
By the 1950s, their sons Charles Jr. and William joined the company, ushering in an era of expansion. More production equipment was purchased to meet demand as the brand became known nationwide for their distinctive printed textiles.
In 1962, Waverly acquired the historic Mount Vernon Mills in Baltimore, which would remain their headquarters and manufacturing center for decades to come.
Generations of weavers, printers and artisans would practice their craft at Waverly, passing expertise from one generation to the next. Techniques like block printing, jacquard weaving and roller printing were honed, blending Old World skill with modern technology.
By the 1970s, Waverly had become one of America’s leading textile converters. The family hired professional designers and traveled the world gathering inspiration from London, Paris and Milan.
Their patterns captured the eclectic essence of the decade – vibrant mod prints, embellished florals, opulent damasks, jazzy geometrics. The bold colors and expressive motifs of Waverly fabrics were a perfect match for 70s design.
Waverly Bedding was launched in the 1980s as the company shifted their focus to finished consumer goods. They applied their printing expertise to quilt sets, shams, duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases.
The 90s and 2000s brought more expansion into categories like upholstery, wallpaper and ready-made curtains. In 2009, Waverly was acquired by the parent company LF, LLC, allowing further product development.
Today, the Waverly brand continues to evolve while remaining true to the vision that made them an icon of American style. Their legacy of quality, craftsmanship and taste endures under family leadership.
Now operated by the 4th generation of the Haines family, Waverly offers over 10,000 items for decorating the entire home. Their products grace the pages of leading home magazines and the homes of celebrities, designers and style aficionados.
Yet our success isn’t measured in revenue or retail presence. It’s measured in the joy our products bring to homes everywhere – just as Charles and Alice envisioned nearly 100 years ago.
Our Design Philosophy
“Fashion for the home begins with the fine art of living.”
This quote from our founders sums up the Waverly approach to design. For us, outstanding decor should not only be beautiful – it should enhance your life.
Our talented in-house designers start with an intimate understanding of how people live in their homes today. They translate the latest tastemaker trends into designs that invite you to relax, entertain, work, play, and share meaningful moments with those you love.
We approach each new collection by asking:
- How can we bring joy, confidence and self-expression into your space?
- How can we help make everyday rituals feel special?
- How can we create versatile, enduring styles that won’t soon feel outdated?
- How can we craft pieces that become more cherished with time?
To answer these questions, we find inspiration everywhere – from European runways to vintage textiles, nature’s landscapes to urban architecture. We track both color trends and time-honored hues rooted in heritage.
Each design begins with selecting the perfect fabrics. We use only the finest cottons, linens, silks and velvets, sourcing from top mills around the world. Next, our artists sketch motifs and patterns that align with each season’s aesthetic.
Once selected, prints and embroideries are mapped onto bedding, upholstery, curtains and more. An experiential design process brings each item to life – how will the collection feel on the skin, move in the breeze, brighten a gloomy day?
Of course, outstanding design means nothing without meticulous construction. Our artisans hand-guide fabrics through each manufacturing step, with relentless attention to quality at every turn.
The result of this thoughtful process is decor that’s equal parts functional and fabulous. Waverly designs blend effortlessly into real life while bringing joy, confidence and self-expression into your space.
Our Commitment to Quality

At Waverly, outstanding design is only the beginning. From first sketch to finished product, we are unwavering in our commitment to quality, durability and integrity.
Each new collection begins in our design studio. Here, our team brings together creative inspiration, expert craftsmanship and keen consumer insight. Every thread, color and detail is obsessively examined until we’re satisfied each item exceeds our stringent standards.
From here, production moves to our manufacturing facility. Our skilled artisans have honed their expertise through generations of experience, passing knowledge from one team to the next. This blend of heritage technique and modern technology allows us to control quality at each stage.
Fabrics are inspected for color consistency, tensile strength and correct finishes. Printing blocks are laser-engraved for pixel-perfect pattern alignment. Following construction, every item undergoes thorough examination – seams, hems and embellishments are checked by hand.
Throughout this process, we utilize premium materials chosen for both beauty and durability:
- Long staple cotton woven to resist pilling and maintain softness, even after frequent washings
- Rich velvets and silks that holdpile and luster over years of use
- Solution-dyed acrylic for vibrant, fade-resistant outdoor fabrics
- Powerloomed textures that mimic luxurious high-end fabrics like Belgian linen
Our meticulous construction results in decor ready to become tomorrow’s heirlooms:
- Quilted bedding with plush fill stays lofty and smooth after many nights’ sleep
- Curtains and drapes maintain shape and hang beautifully, naturally puddling at the floor
- Upholstered seating keeps its structure with minimal wrinkling or sagging
- Vibrant printed tablecloths and napkins retaining their hues after many machine washes
For almost a century, discerning consumers have trusted the Waverly brand to endure the test of time with grace. We are humbled and proud to uphold this legacy of quality with each new product we craft.
